Smithsonian Museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery
Washington, D.C.

This Smithsonian Museum is located in the Historic U.S. Patent Office Building that once held the inaugural ball of Abraham Lincoln.  As Project Architect for Hartman-Cox Architects, Marc Wouters lead design for the reopening of the sealed skylights and restoration of the roof. Skylight systems from all over the nation were carefully researched. The seven layers of light filters ultimately selected allow natural light color to come into the galleries while filtering out harmful wavelengths of light. Careful research of the building allowed preservation and restoration of its elegant features. Nearly four acres of copper roof were carefully detailed around hundreds of custom conditions.
