i278 BQE Replacement
"Parallel Method"

Our Studio authored an Alternative Plan for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) replacement, known as the “Parallel Method”. The plan is designed to accommodate the needs of several local communities along the BQE between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street, while also accommodating the demands of regional traffic. The Parallel Method will allow the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to remain open during much of the reconstruction period, protect the Brooklyn Bridge, not increase the levels of vehicle exhaust adjacent to residential areas in the way NYCDOT’s Elevated Highway option would, allow active areas of Brooklyn Bridge Park to remain open, and advance innovative construction methods. We are proud to be working with the Brooklyn Heights Association, NYCDOT, A Better Way, and to see Elected Officials including U.S. Congresswoman Velazquez, Assemblymember Simon, State Senator Kavanagh, and Councilmember Levin formally request NYCDOT examine our studio's proposal. Our studio is working at a fast pace to develop drawings so that we can share more about this alternative in the near future. Neighborhoods are valuable, and seeing members of various neighborhoods pull together to address this issue has been a remarkable source of encouragement.
